There’s something in the forest.
Just in time for Halloween, here’s a real life ghost story.
This is the Aokigahara forest, at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan.
It’s known in Japan as the Sea of Trees, it is thought of as a home to demons in Japanese mythology, and also, it’s a Suicide Forest.
Since the 50s, when they started keeping track of such things, there have been more than 500 suicides in the forest. It’s the second most popular suicide spot in the world after the Golden Gate Bridge. Once the body count hit 100 in 2003, they decided to stop publishing the numbers, and now the cops do an annual sweep just to clear it out.
Apparently it’s deadly quiet inside due to the trees and the forest being located at the base of a mountain, and there are all kinds of rumors about what goes on inside. It’s a popular spot for thrill seekers looking for scares and treasures. A few years ago a filmmaker named Takimoto made a ghost story based in the forest, and he told reporters that he found a wallet containing 370,000 yen, which did nothing to dissuade the popular idea that Aokigahara is littered with money. Others have claimed to have found credit cards, rail passes, and driver’s licenses.
They’ve taken to putting up signs in English and Japanese that urge people to not kill themselves.
I don’t think they’re working.
