Look and listen.
I’ve been at SXSW for the last few days, absolutely refusing to blog about any of it, but now that I’m home I have a few things for you to see and hear, and only one is SXSW-related. I had an absolutely amazing time there, too amazing to really even get into, but there were great times had, and great food eaten, and weird encounters, and amazing shows, and stumbling upon a practical effects demonstration, and etc and so on. Suffice to say, Austin was kept weird. Plus Jon Hamm offered me his jacket when he saw that I was cold, and you can never take that away from me. (I politely declined)
But I digress.
First, this is a shot of a Japanese man being reunited with his dog, post earthquake and tsunami. It makes me cry every time I see it. Donate, and come to The Meltdown this Wednesday, because we’re donating all proceeds to the Red Cross.
Then, please listen to this Iron & Wine cover of George Michael’s “One More Try” off of his Faith album. It’s gorgeous.
Finally, please look at this picture of John Oliver, Kumail, and Dave Foley holding up their green cards. They love this country, and they’ve worked hard to prove it.
Modern office spaces.
Kumail and I ate at the much-recommended Himalaya restaurant in Houston today, and it was completely amazing and delicious, but we noticed something fun about the restaurant. Observe:

Depressing and interesting: will The Simpsons be relevant to future generations?
I’m a few weeks behind on this, but please read the Scientology expose from The New Yorker. Mind-blowing.

An excellent essay at Psychology Today about whether or not it’s better to always care about things or to be detached from things, spiritually.
Always good advice:
Let’s play “How Bad Could This Movie Be?”!
What if I told you about a movie coming out soon starring…
…you’d be like “oh, when’s that coming out, right?
Well, it’s not.
Passion Play, the movie that inspired Mickey Rourke to call Megan Fox the best young actress he’d ever worked with, is going straight to DVD. What’s Passion Play about?
The film is about a beautiful angel (Fox) that is somehow controlled by a ruthless gangster (Murray), but is saved by a down-on-his-luck musician (Rourke).
Yikes.
Jump to see a one minute clip from the movie that will make you squeal with bad movie delight.
Who wants to buy some ladystuff?
Hi ladies! I ordered and received a handbag today that I absolutely adore if it weren’t for the fact that it’s just a little too small for my handbag needs, and this reminded me that I have a couple of dresses in my closet too that are just lovely, but not fitting for me for one reason or another. So what I’d like to do is sell them. I hope this isn’t tacky, but I don’t want to just donate this stuff- none of the dresses have ever been worn, all the tags are still on them, and I just got the handbag today. So click if you’re interested!
Gynomite’s Reading Room!
This was a dream come true a few weeks ago- the guys from We Sing Your Tweets SANG ONE OF MY TWEETS! Watch!
Creepy! The age of consent around the world, from Jezebel!

Julie Taymor is OUT of the Spiderman musical! Le Scandal!
Well, that was nice while it lasted: apparently Lady Gaga’s deal with Target has fallen through because they didn’t hold up their end of the GLBT-loving bargain.
If you want to feel both charmed and jealous, read this lovely profile of Salma Hayek and her new role as French housewife at NY Times.
I don’t know why this pic of Britney from her recent photoshoot for Out magazine makes me laugh.
Fast Food Numbers.
As of the end of 2010, there were 32,737 McDonald’s restaurants in the world……does that number seem low to you? It did to me- I always imagined there were over 100,000, easy. Perhaps counting fast food restaurants is not my forte.
So McDonald’s is number one, right? WRONG. After being the top dog for years, McDonald’s has now been eclipsed by the Eatery of Fresh, Subway, with 33,749 restaurants worldwide.
They are both put to shame by Yum! Brands, who owns Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut, and is responsible for the horrid combo restaurants you see everywhere- all their permutations total up to 38,000 restaurants worldwide
I have nothing to contribute about any of this, I just thought it was fun to know that Subway beat McDonald’s.
Fashion photogs, eyes up here!
You know who created some epic drama and gorgeousness with their photoshoots? Old school cops. Check out these mug shots from the early 1900s on Flavorwire, sent to me by Neary. They absolutely scream with power and mystery… and I’d buy most of the clothes these women are wearing.

Videos of My Life
How could I have never ever put The Afghan Whigs up on Gynomite? This band was so damned huge and important in my life, and this album, Gentlemen, is one of the few albums I can listen to and love all the way through. So with that, please watch my first introduction to them, the video for the title track- Gentlemen.
ARGGGG when that guitar kicks in I just have to throw my body around.
