Song of the Day

November 30, 2011 at 10:12 am (music)

Did you know Prince and Madonna did a song together, way back in 1989? It was apparently supposed to turn into a whole musical they were writing together, but you can’t expect two egos that size to cooperate. It fell apart, but the song remains.

Cashcats, courtesy of Chris Neary.

I was thinking about submitting to be Lilith from Borderlands in a cosplay thing, but when I checked the rules and regulations, I saw that I am aged out of applying by TWO YEARS. Fuck everything.

I put my belly on display for xoJane.

Guess how many times I rolled my eyes during this interview Lady Gaga gave about love.

This is a great list of insanely intricate details that moviemakers have put in their movies that were barely noticed when you watch the film. Scott Pilgrim, The Matrix… it’s all here! (From Cracked, the listmakers)

Oh shit, it’s a Slipknot V Stone Temple Pilots fight! What year is it?

Is it possible that Olivia Munn has done some good in the world?

Here’s a new cartoon by the lovely Jenny Fine featuring me and how Jenny and I bonded over anemia.

Gynomite’s Reading Room!

November 28, 2011 at 8:57 am (gynomite's reading room)

Ladies, Dr. Who is now a single man!

We were just talking about this on a podcast recorded Saturday that’ll be released in the next few weeks, so this news item is a fun coincidence, but did you know Penn and Teller have an unreleased video game from the 90s? It was called Smoke and Mirrors, and part of its “meta” gameplay experience was that you had to take a bus from Tucson AZ to Vegas… in real time. And nothing happens while you’re on the bus, it’s just hours of sitting on a motherfucking bus looking out the window at low-effort graphics. That part of the game has apparently been released as an Android app and is also part of a charity event, so go read all about it, and then get the app to help support the rad charity Child’s Play. (Child’s Play gets video games to kids in hospitals)

A paper company is reverse product placementing by making Dunder Mifflin paper. It has begun.

A brilliant friend of mine from high school, Hab, is taking an interesting-sounding class called Women, Feminism, and Food, and to go with it, he’s launched a blog talking about some of the issues around gender and food- how food ads are skewed towards genders, who does the work in preparing food, etc and so on. Go check it out, it’s good stuff! (Thank god Facebook keeps people in our lives, huh? It would have been a bummer to lose touch with such a rad guy.)

This video of 100 ways to die in Skyrim made me laugh for a solid 10 minutes.

And speaking of, here’s the newest episode of The Indoor Kids with Kumail and I hosting Blair Herter and Jessica Chobot, and all we do is talk Skyrim!

Discoveries of a Has-Been

November 23, 2011 at 10:56 am (discoveries of a has-been, music)

I just found out about St. Vincent.

No, that’s not entirely true. I read the interview Julie Klausner did with her in Spin, and thought “Well, this lady sounds like a pretentious gasbag.” But then I accidentally heard some of her music.

Damnit, she’s great.
