Great writeup of best comedy clubs in LA, including NerdMelt and our little show, at LAist!
The US Postal Service is producing a clothing line. Get into it.
These two pieces about the Onion “cunt tweet” controversy, written by two pals of mine, and they piggyback well off each other. First read Matt Kirshen’s, and then read Gabe’s at Videogum. Amazing work. The gist of each one? It’s funny to take the nicest human and say something impossible to believe about them, and it’s also okay to apologize for offending someone, even if it wasn’t malicious.
More Oscar talk- why Seth MacFarlane’s boorish sense of humor matters.
New episode of Indoor Kids this week- we welome Jhonen Vasquez, creator of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Invader Zim. It’s a good one!
This guy collected a FUCKTON of info about porn stars and puts it in fun graph form. It’s really entertaining.
An interesting take on the new West of Memphis documentary, and how using a documentary to accuse someone of murder is basically a rehashing of what the town did to the West Memphis 3.
It’s time for another edition of Celebrity Gossip Translator, where I go through the most read stories from People.com and explain them to those of you too busy listening to podcasts and creating art to understand what’s happening in pop culture land. You’re welcome.
1. Downton Abbey Cast Covers One Direction’s “That’s What Makes You Beautiful”
Ok, so here’s the thing about People.com readers- they don’t go to a ton of other websites. So a lot of the hilarious videos or memes that we see on fifty other sites is completely lost to them. That’s why this video that someone manipulated so that the cast of Downton Abbey is saying the words to a One Direction song is so popular on People.com. (Editor’s bitchy note: I find all of these videos to be tedious, and end up feeling bad about how much I hate them because they clearly take a lot of work)
The new gestures that new technology have given us- fascinating read.
Here are 17 before and after photoshop gifs that will make you hate society.
I wrote this for Rookie about a “romance” I had in middle school. Real squirmy reading.
Love this model’s TED Talk about winning the genetic lottery.
And speaking of which, a fellow Rookie writer wrote this advice column to a Christian band and it is scathing and hilarious.
New Indoor Kids for this week! Come for the video games, stay for the goat sounds.
A dude writes about how Lena Dunham made him a feminist. Go read it. Or not. Fair warning, it’s at Vice.
Hilarious boy band photo shoots of yore.
Hi everyone! I haven’t had much time or energy to write stuff for Gynomite lately- I’ve been writing for other sites, I’ve been writing two bigger projects (which involves sending them out to people, getting notes, and changing everything), and last week was the pilot taping of The Meltdown: The TV Show. All of these things have kept me busy.
I am constantly jotting down little phrases that are ostensibly things I’d like to write about, so I thought I’d go through a few of those that, although I love the ideas, don’t really have the legs to become their own thing.
Brad and Angelina’s four year old daughter makes more money than you.
This little boy and his French bulldog are the best of friends.
Allison Williams of Girls writes an open letter to Twitter. No one cares that much.
Goats screaming like humans.
This in depth piece about Harmontown in Grantland is pretty spot on. As a person who has a small role in that show, it’s absolutely one of the most fascinating, funny, and horrific things I’ve witnessed. This is my favorite paragraph, not just as it applies to Dan but as it applies to all of us who call ourselves “self-aware”.
And in a way, maybe this is the central question Harmontown keeps asking, of Harmon and of us. Is there a point where simply copping to your own bullshit is not enough, where — especially if you’re smart enough to understand and anatomize it brilliantly — you’re irresponsible if you don’t do something to change it? Is there a point where being honest about what a bad person you are is worse than just being a bad person through heedlessness? As a genius, should you be capable of doing something besides describing the bars of your own cage?
A collection of all the “Is ______ a feminist?” articles out there in the world, making people dumber.
Don’t murder me, but I think William Shatner made some damn good points about Reddit. Read up.
POTATO CHIP CONTEST!
Fun new Indoor Kids up today with our pal, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, sitting in to talk about his lifelong love of games and how they permeate every single thing he does as a director.
New York Times delivers the final nail in the coffin of G4.
NEW POSTAL SERVICE MOTHERFUCKERS! This song was begun in 2006 and finished in 2012.
Please enjoy the video for my favorite song by Grimes. It’s called Genesis.
There is no one more original, bizarre, and amazing than Grimes in music right now. The epitome of cool, to me, is when I watch something, don’t even slightly get it, but feel like it’s my fault and not the creator’s. I love that feeling of desperately pushing my brain to evolve in order to understand art, and I don’t feel it enough. But I feel it when I read Grant Morrison comics and when I watch this.
Best comment on the video?
I just caught my son fapping to this, I don’t know what to think, he’ll be alright I guess?
My hero and role model for life, RuPaul, released a new video today, and I cannot stop watching it and singing Peanut Butter.
Enjoy. It’s fucking Friday.
A complete list of all the network pilots that have been ordered for this season.
I love looking at weird old Valentines, and so will you!
This is a disabled goldfish. I don’t have any more information than that.
In Japan, they take the decorum of their pop stars very seriously. VERY VERY SERIOUSLY. Here’s what happens if your atonement isn’t good enough.
More eye-rolling instances of female pop stars refusing to address whether or not they’re feminist.
Grimes loves Beyonce, and I love Beyonce, so Grimes and I are best friends now, right?
A new Clueless Gamer from Team Coco! In this one, Conan plays Halo 4!
Last week on The Indoor Kids, I mentioned a video from “a Jackson brother” that really terrified me as a kid, and someone sent it to me. This is it. It’s “Torture” by The Jacksons. The eyeball part of it scarred me for life.
