There has been intense, scathing criticism of the existing research patterns supporting drug development and little else. Add to that the issues with drug safety and any scientist should want better things for the profession. There is no hope, now, that the DSM will be based on neurobiological evidence. You aren’t the only therapist who sees it as a dictionary of billing codes and not much else. I think we have reached a stage of maturity where science needs to make the leap the NIH made.

I’m excited for NIN simply because they’re touring again. I never got to see them before the hiatus, and was sad, as they were my favorite band in high school…I don’t really care for most of the music after a certain point, but hey…it’s better than HTDA.

One year ago I had open heart surgery. The complications beginning in surgery and following for many days involved dropping blood pressure, shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and multi-organ failure. The DIC caused a showering of small clots to my brain and extremities. I was in a medically induced coma for six days and at one point the medical folks believed I’d die. I did not, obviously, but I did have significant experiences while in coma, most of which I find fascinating. I am a psychologist by career so naturally interested in this sort of thing.
As many of you have said here, some of the hallucinations I had when in coma and for a few days after were frightening. A few were not, and seem spiritual in nature. Many, when I evaluate them, make sense in that they portray how my body was feeling at the time, my almost-death, and the horrible pain and discomfort and fear I was in.
I am not sure what to do with all this, but feel I want to do something. This is the first place I’ve found to write about it. I want to feel less alone. My body has recovered well, but my spirit and psyche are still in process.
Any replies or resources people have would really be appreciated.

As long as the character is acted well, I don’t really think it matters what race or gender the Dr. is. I think it would be great to cast a female doctor. Why the hell not?!

I always try to remember that people like this fella are a minority and hopefully, with time, they’ll just disappear from the gene pool.

He’s not even human! The internal logic of his racism is inconsistent. Surely a black human is still better than a vaguely pinkish extra-terrestrial on the sliding scale of judging people’s worth based on their physical appearance.
